Seeking Board Members
By Annie Gregory
Thousand Waves is seeking to fill several open spots on its Board of Directors. The culture of the Board closely mirrors the culture you have experienced at the dojo – supportive, nurturing, and fun!
We welcome training members, parents, those with a connection to Thousand Waves, and members of the community at large to serve on the Board. We are especially looking for those with experience in fundraising, merchandizing, event planning, business operations, marketing, finance, law, nonprofit management, human resources, strategic planning, grant writing, and communication.
What does the Board do?
Like the Board of other nonprofits, Thousand Waves’ Board provides governance to the organization. Generally, duties do not include managing day-to-day affairs but, rather, monitoring overall operations to ensure organizational continuity. Board members attend monthly Board meetings, serve on committees, help with special events, review agency finances, develop strategic plans, and otherwise support the mission of Thousand Waves.
What is the time commitment?
The time commitment varies throughout the year, depending on a Board member’s participation in committee activities and special events like the Spirit Challenge and Punch and Kick-a-thon. Directors can expect to spend about 10 hours per month on Board activities.
What is the financial commitment?
Thousand Waves asks its Board members to raise or donate money for the ongoing financial stability of the organization. The amount raised or donated is up to each member.
Does someone have to be nominated in order to apply?
No. If you are interested you just have to submit an application!
Why should I apply?
Board members serve on the board for a variety of reasons. Some wish to give back to an organization that is meaningful to them and others wish to help Thousand Waves carry out its important mission.
If you apply, you will be contacted for an interview. Applications are due September 24, 2010. Successful candidates will be elected in October. The first Board meeting for new board members will be in November. If you have further questions feel free to talk to any member of the Board Recruitment Committee: Pat Broughton (firstname.lastname@example.org), Margarita Saona (email@example.com), Katie Speth (firstname.lastname@example.org), or Annie Gregory (email@example.com).
