Facilities The Japanese word dojo means both the training hall where martial arts are studied and “a place of awakening.” At Thousand Waves, every aspect of the school’s physical design harmonizes to create a place of mindfulness, respect, and alertness. Our dojo’s aesthetic is one of cleanliness, simplicity and order. As you enter the front lobby area, the dojo lending library beckons with a wide variety of books on martial arts, stretching and health violence prevention, Zen meditation and Japanese history and culture. Our dojo features a beautiful, spacious, wooden training floor which accommodates circuit training in conditioning classes and large, exuberant sessions like New Year’s training. The floor is kept clean, polished and sparkling at all times. In keeping with Japanese tradition, the first student to arrive each day sweeps the floor with a dust mop. Stretching bars and weights are available in the warm-up area. A mirror-lined wall helps students refine their technique. Downstairs, a second training area offers extra class space and a place for students to train on their own. In this area students may use weights, heavy bags and a fast bag for improving coordination. Traditional Japanese makiwara, a conditioning tool, is also available. The matted downstairs floor makes a great place to practice falls, groundfighting and rolling techniques. Locker rooms at Thousand Waves are spacious and include showers. Next: Seido Karate
