Meditations on Activism: Yuyanapaq: In Order to Remember
Images and space in the work of the Peruvian Truth and Reconciliation Commission
To help Peruvians face their recent past, the Peruvian Truth and Reconciliation Commission conceived a photographic exhibit combining aesthetics and history to evoke “compassion, solidarity, and reconstruction.” UIC Professor Margarita Saona will give a multimedia presentation about the exhibit and will reflect on the interaction of images and space in the attempt to provide a starting point for the healing of a nation.
This free public program will take place on Sunday, December 7, 2008, from 3:00 – 4:30pm at Thousand Waves. Please join us. Light refreshments served.

Try counting to 1000. It’s hard – to concentrate, keep breathing, and not get bored or lost. Now imagine doing 1000 punches and 1000 kicks in a single workout. That’s what over 200 child members of Thousand Waves Martial Arts & Self Defense Center did on Saturday, November 8th in the Center’s annual Punch & Kick-a-Thon Fundraiser at the Drucker Center, 1535 N. Dayton Street, in Chicago.
Enrolled youth, ages four to 14, collected over $21,000 and demonstrate their strong spirit in the intensive workout. Inspiring demonstrations by the Teen Black Belts and the members of the Adapted Seido Karate program for children with disabilities rounded out the day’s activities.
This event enables us to continue our community based violence prevention work in partnership with schools and other non-profit agencies. It also funds our Center’s scholarship program, which, since 1985, has provided over $100,000 in awards to individuals and families needing financial support to participate in healthy and empowering martial arts and self-defense programs.
Watch the Thousand Waves demonstration at Association House of Chicago's "Fitness 4 Kids" event in early September. Thousand Waves also talked with Humboldt Park families about fun ways to get fit and stay healthy and safe, including karate, yoga, fitness and self-defense.
Our 2007 partnership with Association House is supported by a grant from Little Angel Foundation.
