Thousand Waves Foundation

Since its inception in 1985, Thousand Waves has provided a respectful yet challenging environment for personal growth through traditional martial arts and practical self-defense training.  We have become one of the most established and well-regarded martial arts and self defense schools in the United States with a current enrollment of over 300 active members. Our students train in the traditional Japanese martial art of Seido Karate, practical self-defense seminars and courses, and the modern, eclectic martial art of Kajukenbo. Our programs promote physical fitness, nonviolent conflict resolution, personal safety and a non-quitting spirit. We encourage everyone’s participation, regardless of racial or ethnic background, age, sexual orientation or fitness level.

In 2000, Thousand Waves incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in order to bring our art, energy and harmony to the community at large. We do this work both within our own facility and by teaming up with schools, parks, community centers, corporations and other non-profit groups. Thousand Waves also reaches out to the community through the everyday acts of courage and compassion performed by our adult, teen and youth students at home, in school, at work and in public places. We welcome your support as we continue to forge energy and harmony in the world through our art.

Giving Forward

Just as our instructors “give forward” to their students, so all members of the Thousand Waves community give forward to the dojo, which means both “training hall” and “place of enlightenment.”  Respect for the dojo community means members contribute in diverse and valued ways, from helping with the building’s physical maintenance to planning the annual benefit.

Since its founding, Thousand Waves has offered training to all willing students, regardless of their ability to pay. For many years, students have supported the scholarship fund through personal donations and organized events.

Thousand Waves welcomes your tax-deductible contribution. There are several levels of membership for individuals who do not train and yet would like to provide on-going support to our non-violence work. These memberships include various benefits and keep you abreast of our activities. Your on-going support enables Thousand Waves to offer self-defense and empowerment courses through our outreach programs as well as provide training opportunities to children and adults in need of assistance.
