Five Fingers of Self-Defense Courses:
Individual and Community Responses to Violence

Students learn the Five Fingers of Self-Defense and practice applying these strategies to a variety of situations. In role plays, group discussions and physical practice, you gain confidence as you learn concrete ways to respond to conflict and violence.

You will learn to:

THINKmental strategies such as awareness, strategic thinking, and recognizing systemic violence

YELLcommunication strategies such as assertive body language, verbal boundary setting, and de-escalation

RUNstrategic positioning and when to avoid, when to engage

FIGHTeffective physical techniques to use when other things haven't worked

TELLhealing strategies for survivors and alliance building for individuals/communities

Topics include dealing with harassment and hate-based violence, recognizing the impact of our socialization, and self-calming strategies to reduce our own violent responses. Other skills include facing an armed assailant, releases from grabs and holds, and intervening safely in violence directed at others. Taught from a perspective that emphasizes choosing the most peaceful response to violence, this popular Thousand Waves program is fun, empowering, effective, and community-building.
