Violence Prevention Education
In Thousand Waves' ongoing martial arts programs, students are pushed to examine their responses to violence and learn principles and practices of non-violent conflict resolution. We have created a community that respects and values all members equally. With child and teen students, teachers respond to disrespectful behavior with a solution-minded approach. When there is rough play or someone uses words disrespectfully, instructors seize this 'teaching moment' and address the issue immediately to resolve the conflict. Using clear language that doesn't demonize those involved, teachers gather information about the event, recognize feelings that may have been hurt, and encourage sincere expressions of apology and as well as forgiveness.
Adult students will find that the engaged practice of a martial art pushes them to face their own fear, frustration, and anger. When students get close to their own volatile emotions, they use concrete tools such as breath, posture, and rituals to craft a peaceful response, instead of a violent reaction. Given that most violence happens when there is some combination of stress, frustration, and disrespect, we find that this practice enables students to stay calm in times of chaos and control their own emotions enough to respond appropriately.
