LGBTQ College Students and Allies in Hastings, Nebraska Find their Voice

By Kate Webster

Our journey to teach a 6-hour Self-Defense and Empowerment workshop to LGBTQ students and allies in Nebraska began with the frustration and dedication of one Hastings College professor: “I was tired of waking up every morning, listening to the gay news and hearing about yet another gay guy getting beaten up,” he said, “and usually these guys are defenseless.”

Over the past three years, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) community in the United States has seen an alarming increase in hate-based violence directed against them. According to the Human Rights Campaign, anti-LGBTQ violence is now the third most common type of hate-based violent action (preceded only by violence targeting race and religion.)

Learn how Thousand Waves helped rural LGBTQ college students and allies find their voice.

Parent Pitch: One Mother Experiences her Son’s Junior Black Belt Test

By Julie Swift

(photo)On April 24th I had the pleasure of watching my son, Graham Burleigh, along with three other karateka, Lucia Frisancho, Jordan Roderick- Fried and Marley Holzman complete a three hour test to receive their junior black belts. It was an amazing display of perseverance, concentration, and dedication. These young people showed such maturity in their pursuit of their goals. This was a very cohesive group of students. As I looked at them I thought of all their similarities. Three of the candidates have parents on the Thousand Waves Board of Directors. Three of the candidates have siblings that are also karate students. They had tested for other belts together. They knew their strengths and their weaknesses.

Read more of Julie’s perceptions here.

Website Features New Public Resources Section

To further our goal of sharing violence prevention tools, Thousand Waves has produced a series of free and downloadable public resources available on our website. From our popular “Five Fingers of Self-Defense” overview, to guidance on dealing with harassment, to stress management techniques, you will find a variety of resources which we invite you to use and share with others.

These resources are meant for individuals who have not taken any of our programs, and also for graduates who want a refresher. They are not a substitute for taking a class, but can help those who cannot come to our Center and study with us. For those who are located far from Chicago and are seeking a good self-defense class, please see our resource on “What to look for in a Self-Defense Program” for guidance on finding a good fit.

For our violence prevention and self-defense colleagues, Thousand Waves happily shares these resources through our Creative Commons license:

Eight Senior Black Belts to Test at Gasshuku

In early July, eight black belt students plus Jun Shihan Nancy and nearly a dozen supporters will travel to the Alphonsus Retreat Center near New Paltz, New York for Kaicho’s annual Gasshuku or retreat. The weekend involves special workouts for the whole group of over 100 students, small rank-specific classes, sunrise and evening meditations, and the famous Seido games.

This year at Gasshuku, Kaicho will also be conducting a special senior black belt test for domestic (US) branches. Thousand Waves members testing for nidan include Senpais Nick Elitzik, Aileen Geary, Sarah Kranz and Bill Sacco. Those testing for sandan include Senpais Susan Barney, Erin Marks, Jean Petersen, and Jo Willis. Good luck to the Chicago testing group – Osu!

Congratulations to May Promotees

One Gem from the Written Tests
by Elesabeth Bacherta, new Adult Blue Belt

After the first two weeks of classes, I decided that I wanted to become a member of this overwhelmingly nice community and learn karate; however, that meant embracing the human in me, diminishing the fear of the possibility of losing and risking loving again.

I begin this journey into karate for three reasons:
