Beach Training is Coming!
8.2.2019 by Thousand Waves
Like many Seido Karate schools, Thousand Waves has long held beach training as a revered annual tradition. It’s a wonderful occasion to gather
with our karate friends to experience our martial art amid the elements of nature. No matter what the weather, we will be
at Montrose Beach meditating, punching, kicking, practicing kata and playing karate games.
Beach Training for Kids is tomorrow, Saturday August 3 at 10 am, and Beach Training for Adults is next Sunday, August 11 at 5 am. Check
your email or pick up a flyer at the dojo for details!

Cely Garcia is an Advanced Green Belt training member. Her coffeehouse, Two-Hearted Queen is a Spirit Challenge sponsor of Thousand Waves.
Briefly, how did you come to train in Seido Karate at Thousand Waves?
Following twelve years of focusing so intensely on my career and building my business, toward the end of 2016 I realized I craved for an endeavor that tested my personal growth more dimensionally. As 2017 approached, I asked myself the question I attempt to address every year around my birthday: What have I always wanted to do? I walked into Thousand Waves on the fifth day of the year and beyond a new spiritual, mental and physical challenge, found a community whose values I deeply connected with and wanted to be a part of.
What is one thing you’d like to change about the world?
Otherizing. I wish we all operated from the higher level of understanding that we have more in common than we have differences, and that we could more readily access our ability to respond with empathy rather than react defensively.
What is one thing you do well?
Coffee.
What is one thing you do not do so well?
Acknowledge my own progress.
Who from history do you admire, and why?
I deeply admire all the brave women in history (and the present), across every industry all over the world that have selflessly sacrificed themselves for the opportunity to have a voice for themselves and others, and for the ways in which their courage has allowed the rest of us, directly or inadvertently, to live the lives we do and pursue our own dreams.
Other than Chicago, where have you most enjoyed spending time?
My home country, the Dominican Republic.
What quotation have you found inspiring or interesting?
I’m much of the belief that where there’s a will, there’s a way and that oftentimes, when we don’t see a goal through, there’s a possibility we never actively decided how madly we wanted it. For that, one of my favorite quotations comes from Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist: “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it.”
What foods do you like best?
Anything Dominican. My comfort food is still ripened plantains, baked with butter and melted cheese.
What is a book that has been significant to you?
There are so many! Most recently, Start with Why by Simon Sinek.
What are your musical favorites?
I enjoy so many genres from just about any culture. In my hours of solitude one might find me gravitating toward more nostalgic rhythms like old Latin American boleros or music from my childhood, whereas for ambiance, I tend to be less discriminate, usually opting for tunes that I can sing along to and/or break into dance to!
“Thousand Waves Member Spotlight: Ten Questions for…” is a regular feature of Kiai! In the next issue, Lisa Matznick will answer these same ten questions.
