Camp Kokoro 2011
Registration Opens January 3!

Fun – Spirit – Community – Non-violence – Respect – Art – Courage. These words capture the essence of Camp Kokoro, enticing campers to return year after year and attracting new families looking for quality summer activities. Registration opens January 3. You will receive a $50 discount during the month of January and be assured of a spot in this very popular program. The camp fills up quickly, so don’t wait!
Open to: Children age 6 to those entering 8th grade (fall of 2011)
Junior Class: 1st and 2nd graders
Youth Class: 3rd - 6th graders
Counselors in Training (CIT): 7th and 8th graders
Session 1--Monday, June 20 to Friday, July 1.
Session 2--Tuesday, July 5 to Friday, July 15.
Time: 9 AM to 3 PM

Camp Kokoro (meaning heart/mind) provides intensive karate training for all levels of student, white belt to black belt, plus structured and non-structured outdoor recreation and just-plain-fun field trips to a very popular Chicago area water park. Guided by professional, caring black belt instructors, teen leaders learn how to create the atmosphere of respect, community and non-violence that makes Camp Kokoro so special.
Camp is TOO fun! Every morning, campers meet for team time – small groups of kids approximately the same age led by a counselor and CIT – to discuss the day’s events, chat and get to know each other. The sweetintimacy of these gatherings help the children feel comfortable and confident at Camp Kokoro and nourish deep and lasting friendships.
A special feature of Camp Kokoro is quality, black belt martial arts instruction and a rigorous training schedule that facilitates remarkable growth in the students. Their personal relationship to Thousand Waves deepens and their understanding of their art broadens as they explore nunchaku, participate in kata and sparring tournaments, learn board breaking and take a Seido karate class every morning, five days a week Our code of ethics – love, respect, non-quitting spirit, courage and responsibility – permeates the day’s activities, providing a safe and secure place for each and every camper as they train, improve fitness and have a blast at the park and at the beach.
CITs also receive invaluable leadership training – classes in conflict resolution, first aid, respectful communication and problem solving/mediation. They help carry equipment, apply sun screen, search for lost lunches and perform countless tasks needed to make Camp Kokoro happen. Adored by the younger campers and appreciated by staff for their hard work and enthusiasm, they wear their CIT T-Shirts with pride.
Personally, I enjoy immensely the opportunity to play with the kids at the beach, eat lunch with them on the grass under the beautiful honey locust tree at Montrose lakefront park, sing the camp song and watch them play with kids of all shapes and sizes, colors and creeds, ages and personal histories.
