Love Shouldn't Hurt: 50 Shades of Respect

by Senpai Kate Webster
Director of Violence Prevention Programs

Young women are four times more likely to be victims of sexual assault than any other age group, and the majority of rapes are committed by someone the victim knows. To help address the broad range of issues connected to intimate partner violence – harassment, stalking, rape and assault – Thousand Waves is offering a free community workshop for young women called “Love Shouldn’t Hurt:  50 Shades of Respect.”  Rooted in The Five Fingers of Self-Defense: Think, Yell, Run, Fight, Tell, this workshop will provide young women with tools to help them stay safe in all types of situations from hook up encounters to committed partnerships. Topics include different types of intimacy and how to talk about consent (including both giving and refusing it), as well as the legal issues raised when alcohol or drugs are involved. In interactive role plays, physical exercises and group discussions, participants will practice verbal and physical strategies they can use to confront violence in their intimate relationships.  The workshop will be held at Thousand Waves on Saturday, May 18 from 1:30-3 pm. Free registration is easy and required – visit this link, give us a call, or stop by. Help us spread the word with this flyer.
