10th Anniversary Meditations on Activism Program
By Tony Laden
Parent and Board Member
On September 11, 2001, I had been a Thousand Waves parent for about 6 months. I had watched several dozen junior classes, and proudly seen my 6-year old son test for blue belt. I loved watching (then) Sensei Sarah teach. But in the days after the attacks of September 11, my relationship with Thousand Waves changed.

Just ASK: Words from the Founders
As many of you in the TW community know, our Adapted Seido Karate Program (ASK) is continuing to grow and prosper. Since it was started in 2005 by Senpai Rebecca Angevine and Senpai Max Kuroda, more than 60 children with physical disabilities have taken part in classes, learning physical and verbal self-defense strategies and building self-confidence – all while having fun.
The ASK Program gives so much to the Thousand Waves community, and we thought Kiai! readers would be interested in learning about the founders' experiences within the Program.
Iris Weke: Our Latest Peacemaker Awardee
On Friday, June 17th Iris Weke, a crossing guard for Stockton Elementary School in Chicago’s Uptown Neighborhood, was awarded Thousand Waves’ coveted Peacemaker Award. Iris creates safe passage for neighborhood children not only by helping them cross busy Wilson Avenue, but also by helping them protect themselves from the hateful language and physical confrontations they all too frequently encounter on their way to school.
Read more about Iris and the Peacemaker Award here.
What People are Saying about TW’s Violence Prevention Programs
Recent headlines have been focusing on blitz attacks, neighborhoods becoming divided by violence, and kids being bullied to the point of suicide. Violence is a part of our lives, but at Thousand Waves, we help people to see it doesn’t have to control their lives or be the headlines of their life. In fact, this past Spring we reached over 350 youth, teens, and adults, making a total of over 600 individuals receiving our Five Fingers of Self-Defense workshop since Jan 2011!
We think our programs are working to help people feel empowered, strong, and safe.

Please see below message about an exciting opportunity to attend the upcoming 35th World Seido Karate Annual Benefit Tournament.
Osu Everyone,
On behalf of Kaicho and Nidaime, I wanted to send you all a "Save the Date" notice so that you can mark your October calendars. Along with the Annual Benefit Tournament this year on Saturday, October 15th, we have added some special events to celebrate Seido's 35th Anniversary. We understand that with travel expense and your busy schedules, it may be difficult to fully participate, but we wanted to provide you with this event information.
The weekend events will be as follows:
Lastly, in case anyone would like to stay at a hotel near Johshin Honzan that weekend, we have a room block for Saturday/Sunday at the Marriott Westchester nearby.
Thank you so much.
Osu,
Meg Nakamura, General Manager of Johshin Honzan and Green Belt

Congratulations to Recent Promotees
By letting go of my fear, I could trust myself, trust my partner, but, ultimately surrender the outcome and enjoy the moment.
– Senpai Kate Webster (New Sandan)
Being a karateka helped me to build the courage to take on uncomfortable challenges. I could try, and possibly fail, and know that I could try again and that this would be so much better than not trying at all.
– Senpai Sara Brodzinsky (New Sandan)
Everything has to fit but I can’t be the best at any of it, if I want to do all of it, which I do.
– Senpai Kate Phillippo (New Nidan)
The idea of karate being an empty hand ready to be used as needed helps me to let go of the things that clutter up my life.
– Senpai Mary Nolan (New Nidan)
Respect is prophylactic medicine – it is like the palm of the 5 Fingers of Self-Defense!
– Senpai Max Kuroda (New Nidan)
I completely lose sight of the fact that I have created this rich, full life of mine, and that I am privileged to be in charge of my choices.
– Senpai Pat Broughton (New Nidan)
